The Future of Shopping is at Walmart – Personal Scanners Means No More Waiting at the Till

Walmart has a brand new shopping feature at select stores, and it will change the way you shop. The Scan & Go feature works like this:

  1. Grab a personal scanner from the front of the store
  2. Scan your item’s barcode and you stick them in your cart, or bag as you go along
  3. Scan the barcode at the self-checkout you would like to use, and pay!

So simple! I loved not waiting in line with my toddler, she is usually maxed out completely by the time we get to the line up, and from my experience, out of the 64 checkout lanes at Walmart, usually only two are open. (There is a chance this is an exaggeration…) But really, the lines can never move fast enough when you have a toddler who’s had enough. So this was perfect for us. No line, no waiting for items to be scanned, and I can bag them into categories if I want to, or not bag them at all. Plus, no need to lift everything onto a belt and then put the bags back in. Just go, go, go, which is exactly what I needed to add to my shopping experience.

The other thing that is wonderful about the personal scanners is that it tells you your total as you go. It lets you know the number of items you scanned, the price of each, and the grand total at the bottom. Easy Peasy. You do not need to be tech savvy to operate one of these at all. They are ready to go when you pick them up. Since you are taking them from a charging station, they should be fully charged and ready to go. Just push the button and scan the barcode on the stuff you’re buying.

This feature is being tested, so it is not available at every Walmart location. It is, however available at the following locations in Edmonton & area:

-18521 Stony Plain Road, West Edmonton

-1203 Parsons Rd NW, South Edmonton

-700 St Albert Trail, St. Albert

-16940 127 St NW, Northwest Edmonton

-110 Watt Common SW, South East Edmonton

They are also available at a few locations that include the Canadian cities Okotoks, Calgary, and Vancouver, as well as several cities in Ontario for now.

If anyone needs me, I will probably be at Walmart.
