Urban Zoo:
The new Urban Farm at the Edmonton Valley Zoo is a hands-on, child-focused experience for urban families. The barn-style exhibit includes animals such as:
- Ponies
- Babydoll Sheep
- Goats
- Bunnies
- Chickens & Roosters
- Juiliana Pigs
- & even an old fashioned Barn Cat!
Operations managers say that the Juliana pigs will be the most popular members of the Urban Farm, but I am going to guess that the ponies, baby sheep and super-soft bunnies are going to give them a real run for their money!
Other Features of the New Zoo Addition:
- Outdoor petting zoo style area where children will learn how to groom and care for each of the animals
- Great-size outdoor section with multiple covered benches for resting and shade
- A fake cow for the kids to milk, sponsored by Alberta Milk
- View of their incubator where some of the chickens will hatch
- Educational areas for the kids
This unique addition to the zoo officially opens to the public on Saturday, March 23. More additions to the “Nature’s Backyard” section of the zoo are expected in the coming weeks and months. See more info on the zoo project on the City of Edmonton’s website here.
