Kids Can Catch at Wabamun: FREE Ice Fishing Event For Kids, February 15, 2020

Kids Can Catch is a family-fun event at Wabamun Lake on Family Day weekend. No fishing license is required, ice fishing holes are pre-drilled, and the event is FREE! You can even borrow an ice fishing rod from the Cabela’s tent set up on the ice. (There are over 350 available for families, but if you have your own, bring it with you.)

When: Saturday, February 15, 2019 from 10am to 3pm

Where: Wabamun Lake (approx 35 minutes west of Edmonton)

The Range Road 40B exit off of Yellowhead Trail turns into 50th Street in Wabamun – just travel to the very end and you will find parking for the event.

Want to participate? Register for the event here.

Tips for taking the kids:

  • Make sure you’ve registered online beforehand
  • At the end of 50th street in the town of Wabamun is where you want to park – in the Waterfront Park
  • Sign in at the kids registration tent when you arrive. Make the process quicker by printing and signing the waiver beforehand (find it here)
  • Bring a toboggan – it will be easier to bring your belongings (and kids) across the ice to where you want to set up for the day.
  • It’s a good idea to pack: water bottles, sunglasses, chairs, blankets (or sleeping bags!), and snacks – there will be vouchers for free hot dogs, but only while supplies last.
  • Dress for the weather! Better to lose a layer if you are too hot than to need another one. It can get windy out in the middle of the lake. Mitts, toques, scarves, ski pants and extra jackets are always a great idea.
  • Have fun! The event hashtag is #kidscancatch or #wabamunlake for social media posts.

Note that Wabamun Lake is  catch-and-release only. This event may be cancelled if the temperature dips below -20 or the ice is not thick enough.

    1. It’s so much fun! On the blog where it says “register here” click on the word HERE and it will bring you to the kids can catch website. Scroll down just a bit and you’ll see a blue button on there that says “register online” – that’s where you’d register 🙂 hope that helps!
