I co-sleep with my toddler. And no, it is not because I enjoy waking up to an elbow in the throat. I love my kids to death, but I need my space sometimes (and to be able to breathe without a small body laying on my face, or limbs thrashing into my windpipe while I sleep), and I definitely have come to the point that I desperately need my rest at night.
For a number of reasons, it’s not an option to get my youngest out of my bedroom, which I am sure I will miss one day when it’s gone… right? And my older girls like to come sleep with me sometimes too. I know they will out grow wanting to sleep in their mom’s room all too quick, and sadly, our cuddle times got abruptly cut off when my youngest was born with colic to the most extreme you can imagine – which meant silence when the baby finally slept = mom’s sanity; so only the baby was allowed in the bed for the longest time. Now that she’s finally outgrown that, I want to enjoy as much as I can with all three girls before they’re the ones that want their space.
As I said, some personal space is needed. I waited for a bed sale at Jysk, and purchased two identical queen bed frames (low to the ground, as my toddler needs to climb safely on and off), and mattresses, and put them side by side in my room, and Ta-Da! The Super Bed was born! It is as amazing as it looks. Add the foam topper and it’s like sleeping on a cloud. My three girls and I can all fit comfortably for weekend “sleepovers” in mom’s room (The least kick-y child gets to sleep next to me, and the two arm & leg throwers get a taste of their own medicine sleeping together, haha – not a joke, they sleep on a bed together when we are all in the same room).
I’m convinced that this is the best thing anyone has ever come up with for family sleeping situations. My room isn’t huge, but it did fit the beds together side by side. I would never go back. The personal space is absolutely amazing. Not to mention, not having to share blankets (most of the time). Highly recommended for couples, co-sleepers and multi-child families whose kids love to have “sleep-overs” in mom’s room!
