Benefits of French Immersion: Options at Edmonton Catholic Schools, 2019/2020

French Immersion: Edmonton Catholic Schools

French Immersion in Edmonton:

It’s important to know that Edmonton Catholic Schools’ French Immersion program starts at the very beginning, so there is no disadvantage to your child if they haven’t learned any french at home before enrollment.  It’s a always a good idea to have as much information as possible so you can make the best decision for your family. Spring is the time of year that schools start accepting students for the following September.

Benefits of French Immersion:

  • Working memory is improved in children who practice a second language. This benefits children in other subjects, like math.
  • Learning a second language when you’re young can help students learn other languages in the future.
  • A second language actually strengthens and improves English language skills.
  • More opportunity for travel.
  • Gives children the opportunity to compete internationally to further their education.
  • Better pay once they choose a career.
  • Gives students a competitive edge on the job market: working a government job, or in a school for example.

In addition to language skills, learning skills, increased education and job opportunities, there are also a number of scholarship and educational opportunities only available to French immersion students. This gives them yet another advantage over monolingual students.

Who Can Enter a French Immersion Program:

  • Edmonton Catholic Schools accept children entering the French Immersion program for the first time in both Kindergarten and Grade 1 with no previous knowledge of French.
  • Students wanting to enter the program after Grade 1 are considered on an individual basis.

Where to Find Schools in Edmonton That Offer French Immersion:

There are 14 elementary schools in Edmonton in various locations across the city that are offering the French Immersion program. For a full list of locations with contact information, see the Edmonton Catholic School’s website here.

Good to know:

Students in the immersion program will receive homework, but they are assignments given with the understanding that there may not be french-speaking supports at home. They are specifically tailored with this in mind. The best thing non-french speaking parents can do for their french-immersion students is to encourage learning and reading in their native language.

All Edmonton Catholic schools follow the curriculum determined by Alberta Education, so you can rest assured that immersion students are getting the same quality of education as children enrolled in any other program.

Deciding on the educational path for your child depends on what works best for your family. Look into programs, schools, locations, and feel free to call each school with any questions you may have about enrolling your child. You can also visit the school’s or school boards’ websites for more information.
