Keeping your house at the most optimal temperature comfortable to you and your family is the ultimate comfort. That can mean air conditioning in the Summer or an efficient furnace in the Winter.
Our Summers in Edmonton are now hot. We completely caved at the beginning of the Summer and went with the rental program for a central air conditioning unit with Relianceâ„¢. (You can rent a brand new furnace too!) It came with a free NEST thermostat, which we can use year-round both manually and on our phones.
Tip: Keep your ceiling fans on in the Winter – turn them clockwise (upward airflow) to move the warm air in the room back down, raising the temperature of the room, meaning your furnace won’t be running as hard 🙂
How rentals work:
Yes, you can actually rent air conditioners and furnaces!
- There is NO upfront cost.
- Renter of the equipment must be the owner of the home and sign a rental contract.
- Rental payments are made every month for the term of the contract.
- All maintenance and repairs are covered at no cost to renters of the equipment.
- You can buy out the equipment to own it at anytime.
- At the end of the rental term, you can pay what is owing on the unit to own it, have a newer model installed and rent again, or give the equipment back and purchase your own equipment.
- Don’t forget to ask about a NEST thermostat – they are so convenient, and you can control the temperature of your house from your phone – and you can even schedule temperature control changes well in advance.
Consultations are free. You can book one on the Reliance website here.
Benefits of buying a new furnace:
- Newer furnaces consume less energy, lowering your heating bill (energy costs are going up in Alberta this month, have you heard??)
- Significantly lower risk of needing repair/being without heat while you wait for an expert to come take a look at what is wrong
- New furnaces make your home look more attractive to potential buyers, for when you are ready to sell
And guys – Reliance has a deal going on for the month of November on select furnace rentals – no monthly payment & interest for 18 months! Get the details here.
Tip: Having a qualified, experienced expert install equipment like a furnace or air conditioner is key. If something is done wrong, you can be paying for wasted energy and unnecessary future repairs/maintenance to fix something installed incorrectly.
Servicing your furnace:
Furnace maintenance should be done once a year. It costs around $120 and will save you potential repair costs and money on your heating bill, since an optimally serviced unit will run more efficiently.
What needs to be done during annual maintenance:
- Cleaning of the combustion chamber
- Inspection of the flue pipe (some need repair or even replacement) a damaged flue can leak carbon monoxide
- Check & replace oil & air filters
- Adjustment and testing of the burner
Important: Change your filter regularly – it is suggested to do this every 90 days. A clogged filter means airflow is not optimal, making your furnace work harder for poor results. Inspect & clean your vents regularly as well (once every 2-3 years)
Reliance charges $119 for a 12-point Furnace Tune-Up and you can book your appointment easily online.
