Give Back: Canada Screams for Ice Cream on June 24th | 2017

“Can we get a cookie?” Little dude asks as we put our shoes on to go for a walk.

“Where would we get a cookie?” I ask – enjoying the chance to tease him a little bit.

“From the cookie lady at Sobeys,” Little dude is very serious as he shakes his head at me. How do I not know that we get cookies from the cookie lady?

“She’s just teasing you Sam. Of course, we are going to get a cookie. We always get a cookie when we walk to the store.” Big dude is already halfway out the door but is kind enough to point this out to his little brother.

We live a few blocks from our neighbourhood Sobeys and there is a great lake with trails that make the walk an almost daily activity in our house. And yes, the dudes usually get a cookie.

June 24th: Canada Screams for Ice Cream

On Saturday, June 24, we are going to do something a little different though. Sobeys is celebrating Canada’s 150th with a special fundraising campaign called Canada Screams for Ice Cream. On June 24, you can visit any one of the 33 Edmonton-area Sobeys, Safeway or IGA and make a $2 donation in exchange for a variety of tasty ice cream treats.

What makes it even better is that 100% of the local donations will go to support the YESS (Youth Empowerment & Support Services) organization and Sobeys Inc. will match all donations made on June 24th up to $100,000. YESS is a relentlessly dedicated charitable organization that supports youth facing difficult realities. We talk about giving back to the community a lot in our house, one of the realities of having a mom that works for a not-for-profit, and I love that this campaign gives me another chance to talk to my dudes about the many ways they can support our community.

Kids Paying it Forward

This is also the launch of Sobeys Inc.’s Kids Paying-It-Forward campaign which will provide 150 kids from participating charities a $500 gift card to donate to a community group that has helped their family, friends or neighbours.  As we eat our treat, I plan on asking my boys to think where they would have donated the gift card. I’m pretty sure I know their answers but I’d love to know what other kids say – if you ask your kids do me a favour and post their answer in the comments.

Our local Sobeys is located in Lakeside Landing (15367 Castledowns Rd.).  If you’ve never visited Lake Beaumaris, my dudes and I strongly recommend swinging by this location on June 24th grabbing your tasty ice cream treat and then finding a bench that overlooks the lake (located directly behind the Sobeys) or walk the paved path (great for strollers and bikes) while watching for the pelicans or blue heron.

This post was brought to you by a partnership between Sobeys and Edmonton Mama – all opinions are our own.
